Hamilton has been deemed one of the most influential musicals ever to hit Broadway. Debuting in 2015 and performing for almost a decade, Hamilton took Broadway by storm with its innovative approach. From Ron Chernow’s biographical book about Alexander Hamilton, it tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton’s humble beginnings and journey to one of the Founding Fathers of the USA. A unique story that is both historical and clever, Hamilton has been lauded as revolutionary in its storytelling that has influenced politics, culture, and our youth.
It was created by American composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda who is also known for his achievements in film, Broadway and more. He went on to create the music and lyrics for previous Broadway play In the Heights, another Tony award-winning production. Miranda is also the creator of music and lyrics in many high profile musical films such as Moana. This hit Broadway musical, featuring a ethinically diverse cast, has showtunes in a style that combines new genres like hip-hop, jazz, R&B and more, which has made Hamilton all the more revolutionary and engaging by bringing these genres to Broadway. Broadway hits such as “Satisfied”, “Wait For It”, and “You’ll Be Back”, have become loved by many as top-rated memorable songs from the musical since its Broadway debut. Lin-Manuel Miranda has attributed his music inspiration for Hamilton came from top rap and hip hop rappers of America, he wanted to unite the two different genres together, something that was unheard of! The music of Hamilton is praised heavily by Idaho critics alike, compared to the other Broadway shows that have been staged, Hamilton continues to be more fast-paced and fun than many.
Hamilton has garnered a record-breaking 11 Tony Awards and 16 Tony nominations, Olivier Awards, Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and even a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. So far, Hamilton has achieved success all over the world as it continues its worldwide tour, including the continents of Europe and Asia.
