Frozen was a 2013 film that achieved incredible commercial success across the world. The Disney epic focuses on Elsa and Anna, two royal sisters, who rekindle their relationship after Elsa accidentally hurts Anna with her icy powers. Elsa was to be crowned queen, and after years of seclusion, she finally opened up the palace for the coronation. Anna, who hadn’t seen her sister in years, despite living in the same castle, was ecstatic to finally have some great company, as well as to see her sister. However, an argument ensues between the two, and Elsa accidentally exposes her powers in front of all the guests. Elsa runs away after the Duke calls her a monster. She finally finds her place in the North Mountain and creates a frozen castle, accidentally unleashing an eternal winter on her hometown, Arendelle. Will Anna find Elsa just in time to save Arrendale? Find out by catching this amazing musical at the Morrison Center!
Frozen enjoyed great success as the animated film features a great storyline but an exceptional score. The film garnered numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, and Two Grammy Awards. Having grossed over $1.2 Billion worldwide, Frozen was an absolute cultural phenomenon. In 2017, the musical premiered in Denver. The trial run was deemed a great success, which led to finally opening on Broadway in 2018. The production featured outstanding direction by Michael Grandage. Meanwhile, Disney Theatrical Productions also brought in the incredible talents of scenic and costume designer Christopher Oram, lighting designer Natasha Katz, and choreographer Rob Ashford. This amazing presentation will feature origins music from the 2013 film, including the mega-hits “Let It Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” “Love is an Open Door,” and “In Summer.”
The musical is a massive hit, garnering prestigious accolades, including three Tony Award nominations and a Drama Desk Award. The musical also garnered rave reviews from professional theater critics. Many writers praised the musical for its in-depth look into Elsa and Anna’s relationship. “Beyond the visual thrills and powerful ballads, this adaptation brings an unexpected depth to the relationship between two tortured sisters,” says Arifa Akbar from the Guardian. Meanwhile, Timeout complemented the film by leaning towards the plot of the original inspiration behind Frozen, the Snow Queen. “It’s a thoughtful, attractive, and human spin. If the film is a preschool classic, the musical is maybe a couple of years more grown-up. But its most magical moments will wow every age group.”
Lastly, The Harvard Crimson’s Makenna Walko has nothing but praises for the stellar U.S. touring cast. “From its talented and energetic cast to its soaring musical ballads, “Frozen” lives up to the wonder of its cinematic inspiration and, at times, even surpasses it. Chapman brings an effervescent warmth to the role of Anna, while Bowman’s vocal prowess adds conviction and emotional poignancy to Elsa’s journey from frigid reserve to self-acceptance and liberation.”
“‘Magic” and fun’ are precisely the words to capture the Broadway reimagining of Disney’s familiar family favorite” – The Harvard Crimson.
“Frozen captures all the elements that made the movie so memorable while also shining through as a terrific stage musical says theater” – WBUR.
